Vermont's Long-Promised Lake Champlain Cleanup Audit Never Happened
Original: Vermont Was Supposed to Get an Audit of Its Lake Champlain Cleanup. It Never Happened.
Vermont was due to receive an audit of its Lake Champlain cleanup programme, but the review was never carried out. ProPublica reports that the audit, expected to scrutinise how the state is spending money and meeting pollution-reduction goals for the lake, has quietly failed to materialise. The lapse raises questions about oversight of a multistate effort to cut phosphorus runoff that has fed algal blooms in the lake for years.
Why now: Reporting revealed that a state audit promised to hold the Lake Champlain cleanup accountable was quietly abandoned, prompting concerns about environmental oversight.
