Democrats warn Trump officials to preserve records or face penalties
Original: Democrats warn Trump officials to keep records or risk criminal penalties after midterm victories https://www. theguardi
Democrats, strengthened by midterm election gains, are warning Trump administration officials that they must preserve government records, cautioning that destroying or withholding documents could carry criminal penalties. The warning signals incoming congressional oversight, with Democrats expected to use subpoena powers and records requests to scrutinise the administration's conduct once they take their new seats.
Why now: Democrats' midterm victories give them greater power to investigate the Trump administration, making records preservation a fresh point of political tension.
