China rejects Papua New Guinea artillery shell claim, calls it a wine bottle
Original: papua new guinea
A mysterious object recovered in Papua New Guinea drew claims it was an artillery shell, but China has rejected that characterisation, saying the item is merely a wine bottle. The unusual dispute over the object's origin has drawn attention given sensitivities around foreign military activity in the Pacific region.
Why now: Ongoing scrutiny of China's presence and military activity in the Pacific has made any such claim newsworthy.
