Televised Confessions on State Media Draw Suspicion
Original: Well, people 'confessing' on state TV is always deeply deeply suspicious.
Former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt is voicing suspicion over people giving 'confessions' on state television, saying the practice is always deeply suspicious. Televised confessions have long drawn criticism as footage often appears before any trial, and detentions typically occur in countries where due process is limited. Commentators say such broadcasts raise serious concerns about coercion and the right to a fair trial.
Why now: A prominent political figure's criticism of state-TV confessions is resonating amid ongoing debate over coerced televised admissions.
