Haitian gang leader asks UN to mediate amid security fears

Wilson Joseph, leader of Haiti's 400 Mawozo gang, has written to the UN Secretary General requesting mediation and dialogue, citing fears of escalation linked to Salvadoran troops deployed in Haiti. The US Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, rejected the request and urged a harder line against the gangs. The exchange highlights tensions over international involvement in Haiti's security crisis and the role of foreign forces.
Why now: The unusual move of a gang leader formally appealing to the UN, and Washington's rejection of it, is drawing attention to Haiti's worsening security situation.
