NASA's Swift space telescope, which studied gamma-ray bursts for over two decades, has re-entered the atmosphere and crashed. The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory launched in 2004 and outlived its planned mission by roughly 16 years, becoming one of astronomy's most productive observatories. Scientists are mourning the spacecraft's end while praising its long legacy of discoveries in space research.

Why now: The long-serving Swift observatory has just re-entered Earth's atmosphere, prompting scientists and space fans to share the news and pay tribute.
