Haiti gang leader seeks UN talks as El Salvador sends troops
Original: Haiti gang leader seeks UN talks as El Salvador sends 2,000 troops to hunt for missing soldiers
A Haiti gang leader has called for talks with the United Nations, while neighbouring El Salvador has deployed 2,000 soldiers as part of the multinational security mission supporting Haitian police in their fight against gang violence. The troops were sent amid the search for missing soldiers, adding a new twist to the regional intervention effort.
Why now: The unusual move of a gang leader directly seeking UN dialogue, alongside El Salvador's troop deployment, is drawing attention to the evolving security crisis in Haiti.
