Guardian columnist Rafael Behr argues that even if American democracy recovers from Donald Trump's return to power, Europe can no longer wait for it. He writes it will take decades to rebuild trust in a country that removed a tyrant once, then reinstated him four years later, and says European governments are already acting on that assumption.
Why now: Trump's return to office has reopened debate about Europe's reliance on the US and the push for strategic independence.
