Original: Why a soap opera can feature orangutan nurses and demonic possession
A long-running soap opera has drawn attention for storylines as far-fetched as orangutan nurses and demonic possession, a level of creative license most scripted dramas could never get away with. The explanation lies in a legal classification that exempts the genre from realism standards, allowing writers extraordinary latitude. Commentators find the loophole amusing and surprising, prompting discussion about how television rules differ across genres and why such shows remain exempt from normal standards.
Why now: People are amused and surprised that a specific TV genre legally allows absurd plots like orangutan nurses and demonic possession.
