Scam Site Tried Selling Fake Audiobooks During AO3 Outage
Original: ao3 fanfiction
Archive of Our Own, the major nonprofit fanfiction repository, suffered an outage, and scammers quickly moved to exploit it. A fraudulent website began offering to 'sell' audiobook versions of fanfiction works, despite AO3 being free and fanfiction generally not being licensed for commercial audiobook sales. Kotaku reported on the scheme, warning readers that the site had no legitimate rights to the stories and was simply trying to profit from confused users during the downtime.
Why now: An AO3 outage left fans searching for access, and the scam exploiting that moment drew attention and warnings.
