Trump Floats Pre-Emptive Pardons for Allies if Democrats Win Congress
Original: Trump Floats Pre-Emptive Pardons for Allies if Democrats Take Congress in Midterms
Donald Trump has suggested he could issue pre-emptive pardons for allies if Democrats take control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections. The idea, reported by the New York Times, would see him shield supporters from potential investigations or prosecutions led by a Democratic-controlled legislature. The proposal has drawn attention as speculation grows over the midterms and the legal risks facing people close to the president.
Why now: Trump's suggestion of pre-emptive pardons is a striking and unusual use of presidential power tied to looming midterm uncertainty.
