Iran's navy reports that two tankers struck mines while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil shipping routes. Environmental groups warn that any resulting oil spill would be a disaster for the region, and argue the incident underlines how fossil fuel dependence threatens peace, security, climate and ecosystems.

Why now: A reported mine attack on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz raises fears of escalation and environmental damage in a critical oil shipping chokepoint.
