Debate grows over whether nuclear weapons can penetrate deep rock
Original: “ # Nuclear is not a joker. There’re some things it can do. Others it can’t. This is a very hard problem. Yield won’t do
Experts and commenters are debating the limits of nuclear weapons against hardened underground targets. A 300-kiloton warhead, roughly ten times the Hiroshima yield, detonated just three metres into rock may or may not produce enough seismic effect. The point being made is that nuclear weapons are not a universal solution: some tasks are beyond them, and yield alone will not solve the problem of first penetrating rock before detonation.
Why now: Renewed public discussion of whether nuclear bunker-buster strikes could destroy deeply buried facilities
