Bullfrog invasion: how a frog-leg favorite took over Arizona's wetlands
Original: A single female bullfrog can lay about 20,000 eggs: how a frog-leg favorite took over Arizona's wetlands
The American bullfrog has become a dominant invasive species in Arizona's wetlands, and its reproductive power is a key reason. A single female can lay around 20,000 eggs, allowing populations to expand rapidly and crowd out native amphibians. The species is linked to the frog-leg trade, which introduced bullfrogs far beyond their native range. The story highlights how a food commodity turned into an ecological problem.
Why now: Interest in how the frog-leg trade introduced an invasive species that is now overwhelming Arizona's wetlands.
