Art Week Tokyo video programme questions the neutrality of travel guides
Original: ‘Travel guides are far from neutral forms’: Art Week Tokyo video programme goes off the map
Art Week Tokyo has launched a video programme that challenges the idea that travel guides are neutral, framing them instead as shaped choices about what a place is and who gets to describe it. The programme, described as going 'off the map', invites artists to respond to guidebook conventions and offer alternative ways of encountering Tokyo beyond standard tourist itineraries.
Why now: Art Week Tokyo's new video programme is drawing attention for critiquing travel guides as non-neutral cultural objects.
