A joke calling Kylian Mbappé 'the dictator' is being credited with an unlikely chain of events that ended in a diplomatic clash between Spain and China. Commentators are marvelling at how an offhand football quip escalated into a full-blown international row between the two governments, with the 'butterfly effect' framing spreading widely as people trace the unlikely sequence step by step.
Why now: The absurd escalation from a football joke to an international dispute between Spain and China is striking and shareable.
