Congress votes to end penny production after 234 years
Original: Congress votes to end production of penny after 234 years, sends bill to Trump
Congress has voted to end production of the US penny, bringing a close to 234 years of the one-cent coin and sending the bill to President Trump to sign into law. Supporters argue the coin costs more to make than it is worth, while the move ends one of the longest-running pieces of American currency history.
Why now: The penny's elimination is a historic change to everyday US currency and requires Trump's signature, drawing wide attention.
