Iranian diplomat Abbas Araghchi has announced a plan, mediated by Qatar, to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days, contingent on the United States meeting specific conditions. The proposal signals a possible de-escalation in the standoff over the strategic shipping route, which carries a large share of the world's oil. Observers are watching whether Washington responds to the conditions attached to the offer.

Why now: Tensions over the Strait of Hormuz have put global oil shipping at risk, so any mediated plan to reopen it draws immediate attention.
