Fujimori tours El Salvador's CECOT prison, vows replica in Peru
Original: Fujimori tours El Salvador's CECOT megaprison — and vows to build one in Peru
Peru's Fujimori visited El Salvador's CECOT megaprison and said she wants to build a similar facility in Peru. The tour has drawn attention given CECOT's reputation for mass detention of alleged gang members and ongoing human rights criticism of El Salvador's hard-line security model, while supporters in Peru see it as a tough-on-crime proposal.
Why now: CECOT is internationally controversial over human rights, so a Peruvian politician endorsing and pledging to replicate it sparks debate.
