13 candidates set for crowded Fukuoka mayoral election

Original: 福岡市長選挙

The Fukuoka mayoral election is set to be officially announced, with 13 people intending to run, the largest number on record. Major political parties have failed to coordinate on a single candidate, and emerging political forces see the race as a chance to expand their influence. Much attention is on candidates' positions relative to incumbent Mayor Soichiro Takashima, with observers describing the race as highly unpredictable.

Why now: The election is being formally announced, and the record number of candidates and lack of party unity are drawing attention.
