Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, where Anna Politkovskaya worked before her murder, says it will cease publication inside Russia on 9 November. In an emotional statement, the paper blamed the authorities and security services, saying it had effectively been killed. The editorial team in Europe will continue working, while Russia has fallen to 172nd place for press freedom.
Why now: The closure marks a major final step in the suppression of independent media in Russia amid the war in Ukraine.
