Soviet Drug-Resistant Plague Program Back in Spotlight
Original: "World's Deadliest Weapon" The Soviets Created a Drug-Resistant Plague | Wendy Orent
Writer Wendy Orent is drawing attention to the Soviet Union's Cold War bioweapons program, which she describes as having created the world's deadliest weapon: a drug-resistant strain of plague. Discussion has resurfaced around how Soviet scientists engineered antibiotic-resistant pathogens and what that history means for current biosecurity and pandemic preparedness concerns.
Why now: Renewed interest in bioweapons history and pandemic risks has put the Soviet plague program back into public conversation.
