Astronomers and space imaging enthusiasts are sharing a new composite picture of the constellation Auriga showing five supernova remnants, the colourful expanding shells left behind by exploded stars. The image was assembled from more than 200 hours of observations and covers a patch of sky roughly equivalent to a thousand full Moons. It is being circulated as a striking example of deep-sky astrophotography.
Why now: The unusually wide, long-exposure image capturing five supernova remnants at once is visually striking and has been widely shared.
Rank over time, top of the chart is #1. 2 snapshots from 4 d ago to 4 d ago.
