Uruapan mayor Grecia Quiroz is travelling the city under heavy security protection, nearly a year after her partner, Carlos Manzo, was assassinated. Manzo, who had crusaded against cartels, was murdered while in office, and Quiroz's continued visibility in a violence-plagued Michoacán municipality is drawing attention to ongoing cartel-related violence and political assassinations in Mexico.
Why now: The approaching anniversary of Carlos Manzo's assassination and continued cartel violence in Uruapan are keeping the mayor's security situation in public discussion.
