A commander in Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has defected from the ranks of the group's leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, according to Al Jazeera coverage. The defection comes as Sudan's civil war, which began in April 2023 between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces, continues to fuel displacement and a humanitarian crisis.
Why now: The Sudan war remains a major ongoing conflict and any senior defection from the RSF suggests possible fractures within Hemedti's forces.
