Only five of twelve candidates cleared to run for Ufa mayor

Original: дом-2

In Ufa, Russia, election officials have admitted only five of twelve applicants to the race for the city's top post, according to Business Online. Among those cleared is the current acting mayor. The filtering of candidates has drawn attention amid wider questions about how much genuine competition is allowed in Russian municipal elections, including in the capital of Bashkortostan.

Why now: The exclusion of most candidates from a major city's mayoral race is prompting discussion about political competition in Russia.
