Salt Lake City hospital design pits pedestrian access against security fears
Original: SLC wants a new hospital to welcome pedestrians. Its designers fear retail spaces might also invite security threats.
A new hospital planned in Salt Lake City is intended to be welcoming to pedestrians, but its designers are concerned that ground-level retail spaces included to draw foot traffic could also create security risks. The debate centers on how to make the medical campus open and accessible without exposing patients, staff and visitors to potential threats.
Why now: The city and hospital designers are openly at odds over how much openness the new facility can safely allow, drawing local attention.
