Divers capture record 300 lionfish off Fernando de Noronha
Original: peixe leao
A team in Brazil has set a record by capturing more than 300 lionfish around Fernando de Noronha, according to CNN Brasil. The invasive species, native to the Indo-Pacific, has been spreading along the Brazilian coast and threatens native reef fish. Divers and environmental agencies have been organising removal efforts to curb its impact on local marine ecosystems.
Why now: The record removal of the invasive lionfish at a famous Brazilian marine park has drawn attention to the species' growing threat in the Atlantic.
