Columnist backs a 'northern Olympics' centred on Morecambe Bay

Guardian writer Emma John argues that hosting an 'Olympics of the north' with events such as beach volleyball on Morecambe Bay would be a winning idea. The proposal imagines spreading major sporting events across northern England rather than concentrating them in London, using coastal and urban settings like the Lancashire seaside resort as venues.
Why now: Debate over where the UK should stage major sporting events and regenerate the north has put the idea in the conversation.
