Airbnb pledges $500 million to nonprofit for emergency housing stays
Original: Airbnb pledges $500M to nonprofit, scaling emergency stays and raising questions over housing relief # Economicindicator
Airbnb has pledged $500 million to a nonprofit to expand its emergency stays programme, which provides free temporary housing to people displaced by disasters and crises. The announcement is drawing attention for its scale, but it is also raising questions about whether corporate pledges are a substitute for broader housing relief and affordable housing policy.
Why now: The size of the pledge and ongoing debate over affordable housing solutions make people discuss whether corporate philanthropy should carry housing relief.
