Israel has become the only country classified as a democracy to appear on the Committee to Protect Journalists' list of the world's worst jailers of journalists. The report notes that Israel began rapidly imprisoning Palestinian journalists following the start of the war in Gaza, with detentions also linked to the occupied West Bank. Rights groups and press freedom advocates are drawing attention to the scale of arrests and the conditions Palestinian reporters face.

Why now: A new CPJ report highlighting Israel's rapid imprisonment of Palestinian journalists since the Gaza war is prompting discussion of press freedom in a democratic state.
