Former HKT48 star Tomonaga Mio becomes sushi chef
Original: 朝長美桜
Mio Tomonaga, a former member of HKT48, has become a fully trained sushi chef after overcoming criticism that women should not make sushi. In a new interview she spoke about what she hopes to convey through her craft, saying she wants to repay the people who supported her. Her career change is drawing attention in Japan as a rare step for a woman in the traditional sushi industry.
Why now: Her move from idol to sushi chef defies traditional gender norms in Japan's sushi world, making her story widely shared.
