Mercenary, the Classic Commodore 64 Open-World Game, Revisited

Original: Commodore 64: Mercenary

Mercenary, the 1985 open-world space and exploration game by Paul Woakes for the Commodore 64, is drawing renewed attention online. Fans are recalling its vast free-roaming world of flying, driving and trading on the planet Targ, years before open-world games became mainstream, and discussing how ahead of its time the title was.

Why now: A retrospective or feature on the game has people reminiscing about an early landmark of open-world design.
