Original: "A haven from the heat." A backstreet bridge provides shade from the high temperatures in Tokyo, Japan. Taken July 2025.
A photograph taken in Tokyo in July 2025 shows people using a backstreet bridge as shelter from extreme summer heat, framed as 'a haven from the heat'. The black-and-white film image has drawn attention for capturing how residents adapt to dangerous temperatures, a recurring concern during Japan's increasingly severe summer heatwaves.
Why now: Japan is enduring another intense summer heatwave, making images of people escaping the heat widely relatable.
