Ocean Parkway's reckless driving problem exposes limits on Mamdani
Original: Brooklyn's Ocean Parkway is a haven for reckless driving. Mamdani isn't allowed to fix it.
Gothamist reports that Brooklyn's Ocean Parkway has become a corridor for dangerous, reckless driving, yet Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani lacks the authority to redesign it. The parkway is under state jurisdiction, meaning city officials cannot alter its layout or enforcement without approval from Albany. The piece highlights the tension between local safety demands and state control over key New York City roads.
Why now: The incoming mayor's inability to fix a dangerous Brooklyn road raises fresh questions about state control of city streets.
