El Salvador to send 2,000 troops to Haiti over missing soldiers
Original: El Salvador to deploy over 2,000 soldiers in Haiti to rescue missing Salvadoran military personnel
El Salvador says it will deploy more than 2,000 soldiers to Haiti in an operation aimed at rescuing Salvadoran military personnel who have gone missing there. The deployment, reported by Anadolu Agency, marks an unusually large cross-border military mission for the Central American country, whose forces have been known for domestic anti-gang operations. Details on how the personnel went missing or when the operation will begin have not been made clear.
Why now: An armed rescue mission by Salvadoran troops in gang-plagued Haiti is an unprecedented and risky escalation of foreign military involvement there.
