Pandas return to America amid international politics
Original: Coming to America - pandas and international politics at a zoo
Giant pandas are once again heading to the United States, with a zoo at the centre of renewed attention. The arrangement is being read as more than a conservation gesture: pandas have long been used by China as tools of diplomacy, and their arrival to America is being framed as a signal in US-China relations at a sensitive political moment.
Why now: The pandas' arrival coincides with ongoing tensions in US-China relations, making the animals a symbol of diplomacy.
