Original: Putin hails Elon Musk’s ‘genius’ amid plans for Russian version of Starlink
Vladimir Putin publicly praised Elon Musk as a 'genius' while Russia moves ahead with plans to develop its own version of Starlink, the satellite internet network. The comments come as Ukraine's battlefield reliance on Starlink keeps satellite communications a sensitive topic, and observers are weighing what the endorsement signals about Moscow's space ambitions and its view of Musk.
Why now: Putin's unusual public praise of a prominent American businessman, against the backdrop of the Ukraine war and Russia's satellite internet plans, is drawing attention.
