Original: Vladimir Putin hails Elon Musk’s ‘genius’ amid plans for Russian Starlink https://www. theguardian.com/world/2026/oct /2

Vladimir Putin publicly praised Elon Musk as a 'genius' while Russia moves ahead with plans to develop its own satellite internet system modeled on SpaceX's Starlink. The comments drew wide attention given Musk's central role in US technology and the war in Ukraine, where Starlink has been a critical communications tool. Observers are debating what the remarks signal about Moscow's ambitions in space and its view of Musk.

Why now: Putin's unusual public praise of a prominent American businessman, tied to Russia's satellite internet ambitions, is striking amid the Ukraine war.
