Holy Terrors: Medieval Gargoyles Revisited
Original: Holy Terrors: Medieval Gargoyles
Smithsonian coverage of medieval gargoyles is drawing attention, framing the monstrous stone carvings of European cathedrals as 'holy terrors' that blended fear, humor and religious teaching for medieval congregations. The piece explores why craftsmen placed grotesque figures on sacred buildings and what they meant to the people who lived beneath them.
Why now: Renewed interest in medieval art and architecture following Smithsonian's feature on gargoyles' cultural history.
