New Book Exposes Britain's Child Migration Scheme to Canada
Original: Seven Bucks a Head: The Scandalous Child Resettlement Scheme That Built a Nation by Ken Cuthbertson, 2026 A searing acco
A new book by Ken Cuthbertson, 'Seven Bucks a Head', examines the British child resettlement scheme that sent more than 100,000 children to Canada between 1869 and 1939. The title refers to the fee paid per child. The account describes how these so-called home children, many from poor families, were sent overseas to work as farm labourers and domestic servants, and argues the programme helped build Canada while the children's experiences were forgotten.
Why now: The book is newly published and revisits a dark historical episode, prompting discussion about historical accountability.
