US startup criticised for plan to light Earth from space with mirrors
Original: US startup's demonstration of lighting Earth from space draws critcism
A California-based startup is facing criticism after demonstrating technology that would reflect sunlight from orbiting mirror satellites down to Earth, effectively lighting areas from space. Astronomers and environmental critics warn the technology could disrupt wildlife, obscure the night sky and open the door to unregulated geoengineering. Supporters say reflected sunlight could extend daylight for solar power or agriculture. Debate is focusing on who has the right to alter illumination of the planet.
Why now: A space startup's controversial sunlight-reflection demonstration raises concerns about geoengineering and the militarisation of orbit.
