Native Hawaiians and Easter Islanders traced to same ancestral group
Original: Native Hawaiians and Easter Islanders came from same 'ultravoyager' group
New research suggests Native Hawaiians and the people of Easter Island (Rapa Nui) descend from a common seafaring population, described as 'ultravoyagers', who spread across the Pacific on long-distance voyages. The finding points to shared ancestry between populations separated by thousands of miles of ocean, and highlights the extraordinary navigation skills of early Pacific explorers.
Why now: A newly reported genetic study linking two iconic Pacific peoples is drawing attention to the remarkable seafaring abilities of their common ancestors
