Whales are climate heroes who also need protection
Original: Why whales are climate heroes — who also need our protection
Yale Climate Connections explains that whales play a significant role in fighting climate change. Whales store large amounts of carbon in their bodies, their nutrient-rich waste fertilises phytoplankton that absorb carbon dioxide, and healthy whale populations could boost the ocean's capacity to trap greenhouse gases. The piece argues that protecting whales from threats like ship strikes and entanglement is therefore a climate strategy, not just conservation for its own sake.
Why now: Growing interest in ocean-based solutions to climate change is drawing attention to whales' role in carbon storage.
