Spy Agency-Funded Technology Now Free to Everyone
Original: Intelligence Agencies Spent Billions on This. Now It’s Open Source.
Technology that intelligence agencies reportedly spent billions developing is now available as free, open-source software. The claim has drawn wide attention online, with viewers discussing how tools once restricted to state actors are now accessible to the general public, and what that shift means for privacy, security and the balance of technological power between governments and ordinary users.
Why now: The striking contrast between classified, expensive government investment and free public access makes the story provocative and widely shared.
