Original: Sunlight at night: US startup’s demonstration of lighting Earth from space draws criticism
A US startup has carried out a demonstration using space mirrors to imitate the reflection of sunlight onto Earth at night, effectively illuminating areas from orbit. The stunt has drawn pushback from scientists, environmentalists and residents in California, who raise concerns about light pollution, impacts on wildlife and the broader implications of commercialising access to the night sky.
Why now: Critics are alarmed by the environmental and ethical implications of a private company altering night-time lighting from space.
