Bird flu outbreak rages uncontrolled on Utah mink farm, ProPublica finds
Original: "...That perfect petri dish exists right now, a ProPublica investigation found. For over two months, an outbreak of bird
A ProPublica investigation reports that for over two months an avian influenza outbreak has spread unchecked at a Utah farm raising thousands of mink for fur. The farm is described as an ideal breeding ground because mink respiratory systems are cellularly similar to humans', raising fears the virus could adapt to spread among people. The findings are fueling fresh concern about flu surveillance on fur farms.
Why now: Concern that an uncontrolled bird flu outbreak in mink, whose airways resemble human ones, could help the virus adapt to humans.
