Uyghur exiles in Syria's civil war
Original: 'Our Hearts Burned for Home': How Uyghur exiles ended up in Syria's civil war
Uyghurs who fled Chinese repression in Xinjiang found themselves drawn into Syria's civil war, with some joining armed groups after being unable to find refuge elsewhere. The story traces how exiles in Turkey and elsewhere travelled to Syria, and how the fall of the Assad regime has reopened questions about their fate and the possibility of returning home.
Why now: Syria's post-Assad transition has renewed attention on the fate of foreign fighters, including the Uyghurs stranded there.
