CENTCOM chief says Strait of Hormuz free of mines
Original: centcom strait of hormuz oil
The head of US Central Command flew over the Strait of Hormuz and stated that the key oil shipping waterway is free of mines. The comment is aimed at reassuring global markets and shipping lines that tanker traffic through the strait, which carries a large share of the world's oil, remains safe amid regional tensions with Iran.
Why now: The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global oil artery, so any US statement about threats to shipping there draws wide attention.
