Original: APTOPIX Panama Lionfish Championship
Panama held a lionfish championship, an event centered on catching the invasive species that threatens local reef ecosystems. Lionfish tournaments are typically organized to reduce the fish's spread while promoting competitive spearfishing and raising public awareness about the damage the species causes to Caribbean and Pacific marine life. Details of winners and participation figures have not been made widely available.
Why now: The novelty of a fishing championship targeting an invasive species is drawing attention.
